The History of Blessed Sacrament School
From the earliest days of the parish, Blessed Sacrament School has played an important part in the life of the parish. Its reputation for academic excellence, sound spiritual formation, and a variety of extra-curricular activities has attracted both families and teachers to the school.
The first building constructed in the parish was the school, with a chapel, in 1928. The school, with classrooms for grades K through Eight, offered the Diocese of Wichita’s first Kindergarten. The two-story red brick building was located on the corner of Douglas Avenue and Quentin Street.
In 1940, a gymnasium, kitchen and hall were added to the north end of the school building. By 1946, Mass and other church services were moved to the gymnasium and the original chapel was converted into classrooms. In 1957, the gymnasium was updated and in 1958, the new building located between the church and school was built for use as a convent. It now houses the Middle School.
The parish launched an extensive two-phase renovation and building program for the school in 1997. The work for Phase One was completed in 1998. The 13,000 square foot addition included new school administrative offices, an expanded multimedia library with computer stations, and a technology/research lab with 16 computer stations. The computer technology is constantly updated to offer the most current instruction models for our students.
In 2002, an 8,000 square foot gymnasium with a walking track and additional classrooms for music and Spanish programs completed the planned improvements for the school. In 2005, preschool programs for 3-year-old and 4-year-old children were incorporated into the school curriculum.
The Sisters of St. Joseph of Wichita taught executively from 1928 through the 1954-1955 school year. From that point, a combination of religious and lay faculty served the school. Today the faculty consists of all lay teachers, many of whom have advanced degrees. To insure that the primary focus of the school continues to be to teach the values, doctrines, and moral traditions of the Catholic Church, all teachers are required to complete the diocesan religious certification program.
Blessed Sacrament School offers a special combination of excellence in faith, dedicated teaching and high principles that have served generations of families and young people.
