The Language Arts program teaches reading, grammatical, and writing skills through use of the Open Court reading program in grades K-5. Primary and Intermeditate grades are taught by their teacher. In Middle School, the Language Arts program becomes split into a three-tiered literature, grammar, and composition approach that reinforces basic skills while expanding the scope and breadth of the students’ development. Analytical skills are further developed through content area application of the reading skills obtained through the Open Court program.

Reading for information, critical analysis of integrated concepts, and an appreciation for the written and oral languages as gifts of God are all important goals of the Blessed Sacrament Language Arts program. These gifts are to be treasured as a basic component of a Catholic education. Classroom teachers strive to reinforce and hone the students’ language arts skills through creative use of outside curricular materials and such approaches as the Six Trait Writing Style.

Each student has one library period a week to encourage an appreciation for reading, enlarge vocabulary, and broaden knowledge of our world, to stimulate the minds, and to develop library skills. Students are given opportunities for practicing oral reading in the classroom each day. Additional opportunities are available such as doing the readings at daily Mass.
